Even though Star Trek has been a huge favourite after Avatar it was NOT nominated for best picture this year! Star Trek IS nominated for best SFX though, but Avatar will naturally win that category.

There was much buzz about the expansion of of the Best Picture category to 10 and how that would bring some mainstream films into the mix, possibly Star Trek. The 2009 Star Trek film did end up on the National Board of Review Top 10, and was also one of 10 nominees by the PGA, but in the end didn’t make it for the Academy. Here is the list of the 10 Best Picture nominees.

The Gatekeeper SMS campaign!

We've been working for a while to solve a few practical problems setting up an SMS account for our annual competition! We'll be posting a phone number in April as well as a code for two alternative answers, and the prices are brilliant. They range from a trip to Stockholm and our shooting and a part in the movie in one of the scenes where the original actors participate to a piece of an original uniform and breakfast with an original actor - and more. ;) Unfortunately this may be a Swedish competition only. Details in April!

Thomas
12-03-2010, 22:48
The International Campaign

While the SMS campaign most likely will be local, we have constructed another huge international campaign that will ensure that ALL Trekkies and Warsies can participate in the movie without ever leaving their countries. This campaign will be presented in April and will be spread to most International Star Trek and Star Wars sites and organization around the planet.

Here's sneak peek on how the home page will look like in April when these campaigns are launched.

Gatekeeper News Letter - March 2010

Hi, again possums!

The film production is developing nicely. Here are the latest details on the production since last time we spoke:

Cap & Design
The Gatekeeper producers have not concentrated on the press as of yet, but as our production techniques have captured the interest of those that have heard about us, we have still had quite a few interviews in newspapers, magazines and on the radio.

One of these is the biggest graphical arts magazine in Scandinavia "Cap & Design". For their Christmas issue, December 2009, they did an seven page article about the production. Naturally we'll translate all media coverage but as of jet it's in Swedish, and you'll find it here:

http://capdesign.idg.se/2.990/1.287222/gatekeeper---varldens-storsta-fanfilmproduktion

Another Celeb Joins The Production
Voyager actor Stephen Rappaport has agreed to participate in the Gatekeeper production with a cameo providing we put together a contract we can both agree on. Naturally such a deal is tentative as with all celeb actors, which means that the actors can pull out at any time, which they usually only do if given a time consuming gig that gets in the way. Given that our production is 3 years I'm sure we'll be able to fit everyone in even then.

Rappaport did the very impressive alien Motura (Who stole Nelix's lung) in the Voyager episode "Phage". He is also known from "ER" and "NYPD Blue".

Costumes
As you know the first shootings will be concentrated around the Opening and the Vignette, and so we've started to produce the costumes involved in these scenes. The Opening present a family of four living on the terra formed planet Mars. A Klingon father with his Bajoran wife, and their mixed kids (a boy and a girl).

The first two costumes were for the father and son (Sketches), but also for the Captain in the vignette sequence. We have about 20 turtlenecks ready, and the jackets are awaiting colouring before being put together:
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2885648&l=0016bd4e9b&id=558121422

The next two were for mother and daughter and was made civilian and to fit the colour pallets of Mars. They were designed and produced by the brilliant Karin Bjurström, and will be aged before we start shooting:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3586017&l=62a1d7c531&id=558121422

Miniature Setting
As you know we'll be using both CGI and large miniatures for this movie and the first miniature is the house on Mars. The building has been delayed after the decision was made to expand the size with 50% which means buying a bit heavier materials.

The reason we build these this big is for the textures and lighting to look as realistic as possible. In addition to this we have adapted old matte painting techniques to trick the eyes into buying the model as a full size one by creative use of reflections and multiple cameras filming the reflections separately.

Future Shooting Schedule - 2010
We'll be shooting two entire sequences (The Opening, which we've started on, and the Vignette) as well as a single scene for later in the movie with Mark Allen Shepherd (in June). Mark did Morn in Deep Space Nine and has become a dear friend of the Norwegian Trekker community, as have Richard Arnold (advisor for Roddenberry for 16 years). We will do our best to invite Richard this year as well.

We've received lots of mail asking for when each actor are visiting - and Denise Crosby especially. We had hoped to do Crosby's scenes this summer but given that she'll have a full CGI body we would very much like to finish this before recording her voiceover for it. This means that the Crosby scenes will be recorded next summer. This will also ensure a more memorable visit for Crosby (and guest), as we prefer to spoil our gusts rotten while they're here!

Props/Setting
The props/setting production is rolling forward and we have concentrated on the shootings this year. This means badges, PADDs, furniture, replicator, computer screens, Bat'leth and more.

Make-up
The Make-up for the first shootings contains a full Klingon and Bajoran make-up, as well as two children with Bajoran nose ridges with a part turtle forehead.

Mars Monster / Klingon Pet
The Mars Monster is ready, and for those of you that have read the script you know it is only seen for a few seconds in the beginning of the Opening. It has a snake's body and this head:
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3924458&l=e175ea9f2a&id=558121422

We will also do a Warringul - which is best described as a Klingon lizzard dog, instead of the cat we used earlier on. It looked something like this in the original shows:
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/File:Klingon_dog,_Star_Trek_III.jpg

April National Competition
We'll be presenting two campaigns in April. One National (Swedish)- as it involves SMS with your mobile phone - and one International.

The national one is a competition with amazing prices!!! More about this on our forum!

April International Campaign
The International campaign is a way for everyone to be able to participate in front of the camera without ever leaving their home.

The home page will look like this when the competition starts:

Forum
Keep in mind that the forum is up and running and that all details of the production are presented here first - and in greater detail than on Facebook.
It is created partly to inform everyone, but also for everyone involved to be able to participate in the debates about each detail.

The Script & everyone waiting for parts
The script is now being presented on the forum part by part. Most of you have been waiting with great passion for the third (and last) part of the script, and while it was finished in August it has been rewritten several times - as new additions to our cast has surfaced. A luxury problem in other words. But we have now decided to post it as is, and rewrite it as we go. So stay tuned.

For those of you waiting for specific parts this is the part where you'll find your name.

News Letters
This is the last News Letter to be sent as mail. In the future it will be posted on Facebook and our Gatekeeper Forum. If it contains sensitive information it will be posted in full in the forums but in an edited version on Facebook. In other words it is time that everyone involved demonstrate their interest in participating by register a profile in our forums!

PS! We will naturally still keep our celebs updated by mail!

Our DropBox seems to have had a few problems lately so DropBox links posted on our page may not work. We'll post the pics directly in the forums from now on! :) The pic you can't see in the newsletter is posted in the article above - so don't panic! ;)

PS! I'm away for a few days so our next articles will be posted Sunday/Monday.

First Original Actor Visiting

Mark Allen Shepherd (Morn in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) will be the first original actor to shoot a scene for the "Gatekeeper", and will most likely do so in June.

You will also get to meet him for a stage interiew at Subtopia (Alby) where he'll talk about his time on the Deep Space nine set, how he got th epart, and what happend behind the camera.

In addition to this he will be signing at the SF Bokhandeln (sci-fi book store) in Gamla stan (old Town) in Stockholm.

We'll ask him to bring the Morn head if possible. I believe he got to keep at least one of them. More about this later.

Virtual Gatekeeper

The Gatekeeper station will be created in CGI - inside and out, and used as an online station. This will be the focal point of a new organization by the same name, and its members will be offered a private quarter, as well as a number of activities and portals aboard the station. The station will also be visited by real Sci-Fi actors for everyone to talk to. However - no one are to reveal their identity while aboard the station. Everyone will have their own "avatar" and will create a personality to fit.

We are therefore looking for game producers and programmers to create this web page, and will keep working on this project while creating the movie.

1st of 4 Green Screen Studios ready to go!

We've been waiting for a while with our actual shootings, while everything else is being produced, due to our negotiation with several future partners. Most likely everything will fall into place but they plan things a bit slower, and so we've decided to finish the opening sequence in a green screen studio in Vesterås. We will start planning the details around the shoot any time now, and shoot the entire scene with stand-ins, to ensure that the real shoot is as smooth as possible, and that each frame is very well planned! There will be photos and film from this production as we go.

Gatekeeper TV

Since we've been concentrating on all the aspects of the film that has to do with CGI, make-up, props, costumes and setting, some may feel that nothing is happening. Nothing could be further from the truth. Creating a film is more than just the shooting. To give everyone a peak behind the camera, and very soon even a peak in front of the camera, we have decided to post a Gatekeeper TV on our web page in a few weeks. Here we will be posting small film clips from our production!

Next script post to tomorrow or Thursday. :)

And while you wait - here's the receip for Harry Potter's Butterbeer

(In Norway and Sweden ju substitute the cream soda with Farris and a few Vanilla drops. If you don't have a termometer just Microwave it for 1 - 1.5 minute):

BUTTERBEER

Start to finish: 1 hour (10 minutes active)

Servings: 4

•1 cup light or dark brown sugar

•2 tablespoons water

•6 tablespoon butter

•1/2 teaspoon salt

•1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar

•3/4 cup heavy cream

•1/2 teaspoon rum extract

•Four 12-ounce bottles cream soda

Brew:
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, until the mixture reads 240 F on a candy thermometer.
Stir in the butter, salt, vinegar and 1/4 cup heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.

Foam:
In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.

To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

Aye, that's the work of Michael «naHQun» Roney, Jr.; you can find more information on this here (http://www.cultureshockevents.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=196:there-are-klingons-in-the-jenolan-caves&catid=1&Itemid=67).

Lots of interesting stuff has been happening in the tlhIngan Hol community, lately, actually:

Klingons invaded Comic-con (translations by voragh, qurgh and naHQun):

The Klingon Language Institute held its seventeenth annual grand meeting - qep'a' wa'maH SochDIch - in Essington, Pennsylvania:

...and they're putting on a Klingon opera in the Hague:

On the home field, the founder of Klingonska Akademien in Uppsala - Zrajm C. Akfohg - will be giving a beginner's course in Klingon at Medborgarskolan in Stockholm: Link (http://medborgarskolan.se/templates/pages/CoursePage.aspx?lid=180&sgid=11&sid=1111&cid=444426_Gustav)

(My apologies if this is too far off-topic; I couldn't resist :P)

Thanks for some great tips there, Hyor! I hope there will be many enough attending for the course to be executed. With Scandinavia being a very small Star Trek marked and 800 crowns to attend it may prove difficult. We need to bring him into the production though!

Aye; I wouldn't be surprised if half of the people there are actually people who already know a fair bit of Klingon, and are there mainly to meet other Klingonists and to pick up a copy of the revised tlhIngan Hol mu'ghom mach (Klingon pocket dictionary).
I could ask him if he's interested in joining when I'm there. Some of the other people who are taking the course might be interested, too.

We are still working on the next part of the script! It's a HUGE scene where the UFP Headquarters get hit by Vader's army!

The forums are finally back and the latest script part will be posted shortly! It became a much bigger scene than planned which is the reason for the delay! :)

I don't know if this is the right place, but I've read the script and want an explanation of how R2D2 and C3PO got into the Gatekeeper station before everyone else from the Star Wars universe? Can you just tell me how?

This will be explained in one of the next script posts and is one of the questions we get most often. hehe But everything is planned in great detailes even before we started writing the script so I think you will be pleased!

We've been a bit quiet lately. The reason for this is the Subtopia festival this week, which takes a lot of time to prepair. But we'll be back again soon.

PS! We always answer questions though! ;)

Thursday to Sunday you'll find us in a tent at the Subtopia Festival (Alby, Stockholm, Sweden). We'll display some of our props, effects and arts, and will also do zombie make-up for children.

We need as much help as we can get with standing in the tent, giving information, keeping us company and doing make-up if you're... up to it! ;) If you stay all day (the two of you that contact me first) you'll get dinner every day and even lunch Saturday and Sunday. What do you say?

How come its only children that gets all the make up at festivals? Isnt it adult discrimination? *Jellous* :) J.
