A fan film is a film based on other films, TV shows or comic books and is therefore non-commercial as the copyright lies elsewhere.
The first fan film was a short made in 1926 - inspired by the TV show "The Little Rascals". But it wasn't until the 1970ies, when the science fiction conventions got popular, that the general public got to se all the fan films created inspired by shows and films like Star Trek, Star Wars, the new Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica.
Gatekeeper is based on the two Sci-Fi giants Star Trek and Star Wars and you may read more about the plot in other parts of these forums.
